Shades is Growing, Be Part of Our Success
By Theresa A. Tracy
Editor-in-chief

Every fall I write an editorial that updates you about important developments regarding Shades, your magazine. In keeping with that tradition, allow me to share Shades highlights from 2005 before reviewing the exciting content featured in this issue.

Until recently Shades has been among the best-kept secrets in Chicago known only to students like you who get it free at school. But starting this month, readers will be able to purchase Shades at bookstores and newsstands in Chicago. Look for this issue at the Full Circle Bookstore on the South Side, Heritage Books on the West Side, The Underground Bookstore on the East Side and Situs Media Group's newsstand on the north side. A detailed store locator is included in this issue.

Watch for the premiere of The Shades Hour, a 30-minute television show that addresses issues relevant to young black women and features fashion, fitness, health, beauty and entertainment news, interviews and live performances. For a seat in our studio audience or to suggest a show topic, email showproducer@shadesmag.com.

The original Shades magazine will continue to be your source for accurate, timely information. In this issue you'll read how college students who survived Hurricane Katrina are resettling in Chicago; learn about judicial rulings and new federal laws that impact you; and get cooking tips to help you maintain a healthy diet while away at college or whip up a tasty treat for a quick after high school snack.

Our entertainment section will preview fall's new shows, feature celebrity interviews, and review blockbuster summer movies soon to be available on DVD. And can a big star keep fame and fortune from gong to her head? Holly Robinson Peete can. Read about how she draws from her mother's teachings to stay grounded while living the American dream; and how Tamara Taylor went from a humble Canadian upbringing to a Hollywood celeb with a starring role in a new TV show.

For fashion and beauty information check out fabulous fabrics, fancy footwear & fantastic finds, a 16-page fashion spread featuring flirty skirts, dainty denims, cute corduroys and comfy separates and see the back to school makeover created for a lucky college student in On The Beauty Tip.

Remember Shades is your magazine featuring your style, your look, your voice and your choice. We encourage you to contribute to our success by participating in content selection and story development. Write us with ideas and issues you want to read more about, talk in our chat rooms and post messages on our boards at www.shadesmag.com.

Welcome to Shades...dedicated to your success. Peace Theresa Tracy Editor/Publisher
